Midden 20ste eeuw staan de Italiaans-Amerikaanse Vito Genovese en Frank Costello elk aan het hoofd van een maffiagroepering. In het jaar 1957 poogt Genovese zijn rivaal Costello te vermoorden. Dit mislukt, maar Costello raakt wel zwaargewond. Voor deze laatste markeert dit het keerpunt om uit het criminele milieu te stappen.
